Balance your Pitta this Summer

According to Ayurveda the human body is a small replica of the universe. Whatever elements make up the macrocosm exist in the microcosm. This means that the water, fire, air, earth and space primordial elements – exist in everything that is part of the universe including us, human beings.

Every one of us, holds all of these elements in various proportions. This is what makes us unique, this is our DNA.

Ayurveda categorises elements as:
  • Pitta (water and fire)
  • Vata (air and space)
  • Kapha (earth and water)
What are the characteristics of pitta dosha?
Pitta dosha, holds the same qualities (gunas) as the water and fire elements. This is how you can recognise pitta in your body and Nature.
  • Oily (Sasneha)
  • Hot (Ushna)
  • Sharp (Tikshna)
  • Light (Laghu)
  • Sour odour (Visram)
  • Mobile (Sara)
  • Liquid (Drava)

Signs of Pitta Imbalance:

  • Overheating or sweating excessively.

  • Skin redness or sensitivity.

  • Inflammation internally and externally
  • Irritability, anger or impatience.

  • Pitta dosha stands for the energy of transformation – metabolism. Pitta carries the meaning of “that which digests”. Therefore the most important function of pitta in the body is digestion or the transformation of food. Many digestive issues can stem from Pitta imbalances.

Ayurvedic Tips for Summer:

  1. Cool Down with Food: Incorporate cooling foods like cucumber, watermelon, coconut, and leafy greens. Avoid spicy, sour, and salty foods that increase heat. Focus on foods that are sweet, astringent and bitter. Use herbs such as coriander, fennel and cardamon.

  2. Hydrate Wisely: Sip on refreshing beverages like coconut water or mint-infused water. Ice water is not recommended.

  3. Stay in the Shade: Avoid direct sun during peak hours, and wear light, breathable clothing. Wear cool colours such as pale blue, pale green and white.

  4. Practice Self-Care: Daily self-massage (abhyanga) with cooling oils helps to calm Pitta and nourish the skin.

  5. Calm mind: Focus on surrendering, rather than controlling
  6. Moderate exercise: Such as; Yoga, Swimming, Biking riding. Avoid exercising during the hottest part of the day.
