HERBAL DHOOMPAN IN AYURVEDA

In classical Ayurveda, herbal smoke inhalation (dhoompan) is traditionally used to support the head, throat, sinuses, and respiratory channels—areas where Vata and Kapha commonly accumulate.

Traditional texts describe dhoompan as supportive for:

• Clearing and opening the airways
• Encouraging clarity and alertness (via Pitta stimulation)
• Reducing excess Kapha and Vata in the head, chest, throat, and nose
• Supporting the voice, sense organs, scalp, and upper respiratory tissues

Dhoompan is also traditionally used as a natural, nicotine-free alternative for those wishing to reduce tobacco reliance.

THE FULL AYURVEDIC SEQUENCE: NETI → NASYA → DHOOMPAN

Ayurveda teaches that these therapies work best in a specific order:

1. Neti – Cleanse
2. Nasya – Nourish & Lubricate
3. Dhoompan – Clear & Balance

This sequence ensures the channels of the head and neck are:

cleansed → nourished → refined and balanced.

1. HOW TO PERFORM NETI (NASAL CLEANSING)

Neti is traditionally done first because it clears the nasal passages of mucus, dust, and environmental irritants, allowing Nasya oil to be properly absorbed.

What you need:
A neti pot + warm sterile water + ¼–½ tsp non-iodised salt

Steps:

  1. Warm the water so it is body-temperature.

  2. Dissolve the salt completely.

  3. Lean forward over a sink and tilt the head slightly.

  4. Insert the neti pot spout into the nostril.

  5. Allow the saline solution to flow in one nostril and out the other.

  6. Switch sides.

  7. Gently blow the nose until clear.

Purpose:
• Clears Kapha congestion, clears infections, clears the mind, enhances focus
• Opens the nasal pathways and improves breathing
• Prepares the tissues for Nasya

2. HOW TO PERFORM NASYA (HERBAL NASAL OIL THERAPY)

Nasya is done after Neti because the nose is clean and receptive.
It nourishes, lubricates, and calms the tissues of the sinuses, throat, and head.

Suitable oils:
BioVeda Anu Thailam Oil
• Pure warm BioVeda Organic Sesame oil

Steps:

  1. Lie down or recline with the head slightly tilted back.

  2. Place 2–5 drops of warm Nasya oil into each nostril.

  3. Sniff gently to draw the oil up.

  4. Massage the sides of the nose, forehead, and cheeks.

  5. Rest for 1–2 minutes.

  6. Allow any excess to move naturally toward the throat and spit out (don't worry if you swallow a little)

Purpose:
• Calms Vata in the head
• Lubricates dry nasal tissues
• Supports sinuses and mental clarity
• Enhances prana flow

3. HOW TO PERFORM DHOOMPAN (HERBAL SMOKE THERAPY)

Final step in the sequence

Dhoompan is performed after Nasya because it gently dries any excess oil and helps clear residual Kapha or stagnation.

Steps:

  1. Sit comfortably in a ventilated, calm space.

  2. Light the Nirdosh herbal dhoompan stick until a steady ember forms.

  3. Hold the smoking end a few centimetres from the face.

  4. Inhale lightly—never deeply—through the mouth.

  5. Exhale through the nose (traditional method).

  6. Take 3–7 gentle inhalations, resting between each.

  7. Sit quietly afterward and allow the channels to settle.

Purpose:
• Removes remaining congestion after Nasya
• Balances Vata and Kapha
• Opens and clears the head, throat, and sinuses
• Provides a sense of lightness and clarity

WHY THIS ORDER MATTERS

Neti clears
Nasya nourishes
Dhoompan completes the process by refining and balancing the doshas

This classical sequence is considered the most effective way to support the upper respiratory pathways and sensory organs.
