Living with the Seasons ~ Ritucharya

What is Ritucharya?

Ritucharya is the Ayurvedic practice of living in harmony with the seasons.

The word comes from two Sanskrit terms:

Ritu – season

Charya – routine, conduct, or way of living

Together, Ritucharya translates as "seasonal routine" or "seasonal living."

Ayurveda teaches that as the seasons change, the Doshas within us also change. By adjusting our diet, daily routines, exercise, herbs, and self-care practices throughout the year, we can help maintain balance and support overall health and wellbeing.

Rather than following the same habits year-round, Ritucharya encourages us to adapt to the rhythms of nature, recognising that what supports health in summer may be very different from what is needed in winter.

It is one of Ayurveda's most practical and powerful tools for maintaining balance, preventing disease, and cultivating vitality throughout the year.

Vata Season – Autumn and Early Winter

As the warmth of summer begins to fade, nature becomes cooler, lighter, drier, and windier. Leaves fall from trees, the air becomes crisp, and the environment takes on the qualities of movement and change.

These are the qualities of Vata.

Vata is composed of Air and Space and governs movement throughout the body, including circulation, breathing, nerve impulses, communication, and thought.

During Vata season, many people notice that they feel less grounded. Sleep may become lighter, digestion more irregular, and the mind more active. Dry skin, cold extremities, bloating, constipation, and anxious thinking are also common signs that Vata is increasing.

Ayurveda teaches that autumn and early winter are times to slow down and nourish ourselves deeply.

This is the season of warm soups, cooked grains, root vegetables, herbal teas, oil massage, early nights, and consistent routines. The body responds well to warmth, stability, nourishment, and rest.

As nature becomes more unsettled outside, our task is to create steadiness within.

Kapha Season – Late Winter and Spring

As winter begins to soften and the earth prepares for new growth, moisture returns to the environment. Rainfall increases, plants begin to emerge, and the landscape becomes heavier, cooler, and more fertile.

These are the qualities of Kapha.

Kapha is composed of Earth and Water and governs structure, lubrication, immunity, strength, and stability within the body.

Just as snow melts in colder climates and water begins to flow, accumulated Kapha in the body can also begin to liquefy during spring. This is one reason why congestion, hay fever, allergies, mucus production, and sinus complaints often become more noticeable during this season.

Emotionally, excess Kapha may present as low motivation, lethargy, attachment, resistance to change, or a tendency to withdraw.

Spring is considered Ayurveda's natural season of cleansing and renewal.

The body responds well to lighter foods, warming spices, regular exercise, stimulating routines, and spending time outdoors. This is traditionally the ideal time to clear stagnation and embrace fresh energy.

Nature is awakening—and Ayurveda encourages us to do the same.

Pitta Season – Summer

Summer is the season of heat, intensity, brightness, and transformation.

The days are longer, the sun is stronger, and life becomes more active. These are the qualities of Pitta.

Pitta is composed of Fire and Water and governs digestion, metabolism, body temperature, focus, ambition, and transformation.

When balanced, Pitta provides drive, courage, intelligence, and determination. However, excessive heat can cause Pitta to become aggravated.

Signs of increased Pitta may include irritability, frustration, overheating, inflammation, skin eruptions, heartburn, excessive sweating, or impatience.

Just as the natural world seeks shade and water during the hottest part of the day, Ayurveda encourages us to introduce cooling and calming influences during summer.

Fresh seasonal fruits, cooling foods, adequate hydration, swimming, time in nature, meditation, and avoiding excessive overwork all help to maintain balance.

Summer reminds us that while ambition and productivity have their place, true wellbeing also requires ease, enjoyment, and restoration.

Living with the Seasons

Ayurveda teaches that health is not a fixed destination but an ongoing relationship with nature.

When we observe the changing seasons and adjust our lives accordingly, we begin to work with our bodies rather than against them.

This wisdom remains just as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago.

By living in harmony with the rhythms of nature, we support the body's innate capacity for balance, resilience, and vitality throughout every season of life.
