The Doshas and the Seasons
The Doshas and the Seasons
One of Ayurveda's most profound teachings is that human beings are not separate from nature—we are an expression of it.
The same forces that govern the changing seasons, the movement of the oceans, the growth of plants, and the cycles of the moon also influence our bodies, minds, and emotions.
Modern life often encourages us to believe that health exists independently of our environment. We heat our homes in winter, cool them in summer, eat the same foods throughout the year, and maintain the same routines regardless of season.
Ayurveda takes a different view.
It recognises that we are constantly responding to the world around us. The weather, temperature, humidity, sunlight, wind, and seasonal changes all influence our physiology. Just as nature changes throughout the year, so too do the energies within us.
Ayurveda describes these governing energies as the Doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Each Dosha is made up of a unique combination of the five elements:
• Vata = Air + Space
• Pitta = Fire + Water
• Kapha = Earth + Water
These Doshas are present within every person, but they are also present throughout nature.
When the qualities of a season increase in the environment, those same qualities tend to increase within us.
Ayurveda summarises this principle with a simple observation:
Like increases like. Opposites bring balance.
For example, during a cold, dry, windy period, the qualities of Vata become more dominant. People may notice dry skin, constipation, anxiety, poor sleep, or feelings of restlessness.
During hot summer weather, the fiery qualities of Pitta become more pronounced. Irritability, inflammation, skin sensitivity, and digestive discomfort may become more common.
In damp, cool conditions, Kapha qualities increase, often resulting in congestion, sluggishness, allergies, or feelings of heaviness.
The goal of seasonal Ayurveda is not to fight nature, but to work with it.
By recognising which Dosha is dominant during a particular season, we can make simple adjustments to our food, lifestyle, daily routines, herbs, and self-care practices to maintain greater balance and wellbeing throughout the year.
This practice is known as Ritucharya—the Ayurvedic science of seasonal living.
Rather than following the same health advice year-round, Ayurveda encourages us to adapt and evolve alongside nature, just as every living thing does.
