Understanding the Doshas
Understanding the Doshas
One of Ayurveda's most unique insights is that every person is born with a distinct combination of energies known as the Doshas.
These Doshas govern every aspect of our physical, mental, and emotional nature. They influence our body shape, digestion, sleep patterns, energy levels, personality traits, stress responses, and even the types of foods and environments in which we thrive.
Understanding your Dosha is like receiving a personalised map of your health.
What Are the Doshas?
According to Ayurveda, everything in nature is made from five elements:
• Earth
• Water
• Fire
• Air
• Space (Ether)
These five elements combine to form the three Doshas:
Vata
Air + Space
The energy of movement.
Vata governs circulation, breathing, communication, creativity, movement, and the nervous system.
When balanced, Vata individuals tend to be creative, enthusiastic, adaptable, energetic, and quick-thinking.
When out of balance, they may experience anxiety, overwhelm, insomnia, dry skin, digestive irregularity, bloating, or feeling scattered and ungrounded.
Pitta
Fire + Water
The energy of transformation.
Pitta governs digestion, metabolism, intelligence, focus, ambition, and body temperature.
When balanced, Pitta individuals are often motivated, organised, intelligent, courageous, and natural leaders.
When out of balance, they may experience irritability, frustration, inflammation, excessive heat, skin eruptions, heartburn, or perfectionistic tendencies.
Kapha
Earth + Water
The energy of structure and nourishment.
Kapha governs stability, immunity, strength, lubrication, emotional resilience, and growth.
When balanced, Kapha individuals tend to be calm, loyal, nurturing, patient, grounded, and compassionate.
When out of balance, they may experience sluggishness, congestion, fluid retention, weight gain, low motivation, or difficulty letting go of people and possessions.
Your Unique Ayurvedic Constitution
While everyone contains all three Doshas, most people are born with one or two Doshas that are naturally more dominant.
This unique combination is known as your Prakriti, or Ayurvedic constitution.
Your constitution remains relatively stable throughout your life and represents your natural state of balance.
Understanding your constitution can help explain:
• Why some people naturally feel cold while others run hot.
• Why some people thrive on routine while others crave variety.
• Why one person can skip a meal without noticing while another becomes irritable and uncomfortable.
• Why stress affects each person differently.
Ayurveda recognises that there is no single diet, exercise plan, or lifestyle that is suitable for everyone. What supports one person may aggravate another.
Dosha Imbalance
While your constitution remains constant, your current state of health can change.
Changes in diet, stress, lifestyle, weather, seasons, travel, relationships, work, and ageing can cause one or more Doshas to become aggravated.
This temporary state is known as Vikriti, or imbalance.
Many Ayurvedic recommendations are designed to gently guide the body back toward its natural state of balance through:
• Food and nutrition
• Daily routines
• Herbal support
• Oil massage (Abhyanga)
• Yoga and movement
