Dhanvantri Oil: A Sacred Offering to the Body

Dhanvantri Oil: A Sacred Offering to the Body

One of our most treasured formulations, Dhanvantri Thailam is named in honour of Lord Dhanvantari—the divine healer and father of Ayurveda. In ancient Indian tradition, Dhanvantari is said to have emerged from the cosmic ocean bearing the Amrita (elixir of immortality) and the sacred texts of Ayurvedic medicine. He symbolises vitality, healing, and the transmission of sacred knowledge.

During our recent trip to Kerala, we had the privilege of witnessing this powerful oil being made by hand in large metal vessels, using traditional Ayurvedic methods. We were also deeply moved to be gifted a beautiful statue of Lord Dhanvantari —a gesture that affirmed the spiritual roots and reverence behind this practice. The statue now sits in my clinic as a daily reminder that true healing begins with devotion, intention, and respect for nature’s wisdom.

Dhanvantri Oil is prepared using cold-pressed black sesame oil combined with a powerful decoction of over 25 classical Ayurvedic herbs. These include:

  • Bala (Sida cordifolia)Ashwagandha, and Shatavari: To strengthen the nervous system, nourish tissues, and support rejuvenation.

  • GokshuraHorse gramSalparni, and Bael fruit: To pacify Vata, reduce musculoskeletal tension, and promote joint health.

  • ManjisthaAmlaHaritaki, and Bibhitaki (Triphala): For detoxification, lymphatic movement, and skin clarity.

  • Calamus rootCardamomCinnamon, and Dill: To stimulate circulation and enhance warmth in the body.

  • Rock saltStone flowerPatala, and White teak: For reducing inflammation and promoting energetic flow.

This oil is traditionally used in Abhyanga (Ayurvedic massage) to:

  • Strengthen and restore the body after illness, childbirth, or physical strain

  • Ease joint and muscle pain

  • Calm the nervous system and support sound sleep

  • Enhance circulation and detoxification

  • Deeply ground and pacify excess Vata

When you massage with Dhanvantri Oil, you’re not just applying a therapeutic preparation—you’re participating in a timeless ritual of healing, guided by ancient wisdom and infused with love from the hands that made it.

Thank you for supporting this sacred work and for choosing to bring Ayurveda into your daily life.

With warmth and gratitude,
Carly
