Where Our Ayurvedic Oils Are Born: A Journey to the Source

Dear BioVeda Community,

We are delighted to share a behind-the-scenes glimpse of where our beloved Ayurvedic oils come from. On our recent trip to Kerala, we had the opportunity to visit the traditional manufacturing facility where our classical oils have been handcrafted for over 25 years. We are waiting on the photos from the factory to arrive, but we thought we would share a few insights in the meantime.

What we witnessed filled us with admiration and gratitude: a clean, well-organised factory run with care and integrity. The atmosphere was peaceful, the workers joyful. Many of the staff have worked there for years—and it shows in the way they move with ease and pride through each step of the oil-making process. We left deeply reassured that every bottle we offer you is made in alignment with the highest standards of both quality and heart

The Art of Making Traditional Ayurvedic Oils

Traditional Ayurvedic oils are more than just herbal infusions—they are potent healing tools, prepared with patience and precision according to classical Ayurvedic texts like the Ashtanga Hridayam and Charaka Samhita. Here's how these sacred oils are crafted:

  1. The Preparation of Kalka (Herbal Paste)
Fresh or dried herbs are ground into a fine paste. This kalka forms the essence of the formula and determines the therapeutic focus of the oil.

  2. The Decoction (Kwatha)
The same herbs used in the paste are simmered in water for several hours to make a decoction. This step extracts water-soluble phytochemicals and sets the energetic foundation for the oil.

  3. The Oil (Sneha) Base
A carrier oil—typically sesame, coconut, or castor oil—is gently warmed. The kalka (herbal paste) and kwatha (herbal decoction) are then added to this base.

  4. The Cooking Process (Sneha Paka)
This mixture is slowly cooked over a low flame (or electric heating now), often for several hours or even days. The artisans carefully stir and monitor the oil until all the water content evaporates, and only the pure, herbal-infused oil remains.

  5. Straining and Settling
The oil is strained through fine muslin to remove residue, then left to cool and settle. This ensures clarity, potency, and longevity.

  6. Bottling with Intention
Once cooled, the oil is poured into bottles by hand or semi-automated machines. At our factory, this step is performed mindfully.

Why This Matters

Ayurvedic oils are not just products—they are preparations that carry the vibrational imprint of the plants, the hands that made them, and the classical wisdom that guides their formulation. When you use a BioVeda oil, you are receiving the essence of this lineage, distilled through love, knowledge, and tradition.
