The Difference between Prakruti and Vikruti
In Ayurveda, understanding your dosha is not quite as simple as identifying yourself as Vata, Pitta or Kapha.
There are two important concepts that help us understand both who we are naturally and what may be happening in the body right now:
Prakruti and Vikruti.
Although these words are often used together, they describe two different aspects of your health and constitution.
Prakruti: your original constitution
Prakruti is the unique balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha that you were born with.
It is your natural constitution, your underlying blueprint.
Your Prakruti can influence many of your lifelong tendencies, including:
-
your body structure;
-
your natural energy levels;
-
your appetite and digestion;
-
your emotional temperament;
-
your response to stress;
-
your sleep patterns;
-
your preference for certain climates, foods and routines.
For example, someone with a predominantly Pitta constitution may naturally have a strong appetite, a focused mind and a tendency to feel warm.
Someone with a predominantly Vata constitution may be naturally creative, sensitive and quick-moving, with a lighter build and more variable digestion.
Your Prakruti is not something that needs to be corrected. It is the natural expression of who you are.
Vikruti: your current state of balance
Vikruti describes your present state.
It reflects how the doshas may have moved away from your natural balance due to factors such as:
-
stress;
-
diet;
-
lifestyle;
-
the seasons;
-
sleep disruption;
-
illness;
-
emotional experiences;
-
age and hormonal change.
This means that your natural constitution and your current imbalance may not be the same.
You may be predominantly Pitta by constitution, but currently experiencing a Vata imbalance through symptoms such as dryness, poor sleep, nervousness, bloating, irregular digestion or feeling ungrounded.
You may be naturally Vata, but experience a Kapha imbalance through heaviness, lethargy, congestion, fluid retention or low motivation.
Why the difference matters
Ayurveda does not only ask:
“What is your dosha?”
It also asks:
“What qualities are present right now?”
This distinction is important because the choices that support your natural constitution may not always be the same choices needed to balance your current state.
Your Prakruti helps you understand your lifelong tendencies.
Your Vikruti helps you understand what your body and mind may need today.
Together, they offer a much more complete picture.
A practical example
Imagine someone who is naturally Pitta.
They may usually have strong digestion, a sharp mind and a warm body temperature.
However, after a period of stress, irregular meals, travel and poor sleep, they may begin to experience:
-
anxiety;
-
constipation;
-
dryness;
-
interrupted sleep;
-
racing thoughts;
-
sensitivity to noise.
Although their Prakruti remains Pitta, their current Vikruti may be Vata.
In this situation, they may benefit more from warmth, routine, grounding foods, adequate rest and nourishing oil practices than from cooling Pitta-focused recommendations alone.
This is why Ayurveda is deeply individual.
It does not treat everyone according to one label. It looks at the person, the season, the symptoms, the environment and the present moment.
